Lightning protection is one of those things people think about after a storm rather than before one. If you have a building you would rather not gamble with — a home, a shop, a barn, or somewhere a business runs from — it is worth a conversation. We will come and look at the building, tell you plainly whether we think it needs anything, and put a price in writing if it does.

When to Ask About Lightning Protection

You have had a strike, or a near miss

A strike on or near a building is the most common reason people call us. If something has already happened, it is worth having the building looked at.

The building sits high or in the open

Where a building sits matters as much as how it is built. We look at the site itself rather than going by rules of thumb.

There is equipment you cannot afford to lose

Well pumps, HVAC, farm and shop equipment, servers, or anything a business depends on day to day.

You are building or adding on

It is far easier to plan protection into a build than to retrofit it afterwards. Bring us in while the structure is still going up.

A barn, shop, or outbuilding is unprotected

Outbuildings are often overlooked because nobody lives in them, even when they hold the most valuable equipment on the property.

Someone has asked you for it

Sometimes an insurer, lender, or inspector raises it. If you have been asked for something specific, tell us and we will work to it.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Tell us about the building

A short conversation about the structure, the site, and what is inside it. You do not need to know any of the terminology.

  2. 2

    We come and look

There is no substitute for seeing the building. We assess the structure and the site rather than quoting from a description.

  3. 3

You get a written quote before anything starts

We explain what we recommend and what it costs, in plain terms. Nothing begins until you have that in writing and agree to it.

  4. 4

We install it and walk you through it

When the work is done we go over what was installed and where, so you know what is on your building and who to call about it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a lightning protection system actually do?

In broad terms, it gives a strike a controlled path to ground instead of letting it find its own way through the structure. What that looks like on a particular building depends on the building, which is why we assess on site rather than quoting from a photo.

Does my building need one?

That depends on the structure, the site, and what is inside it. Rather than guess, we will come and look and tell you honestly whether it is worth doing.

What does Master Installer certification mean?

CGA Electric are Master Installers certified by the Lightning Protection Institute. You can read about the Institute at lightning.org.

Is this the same as surge protection?

No, and the two get confused often. They address different problems and are not substitutes for each other. We are happy to explain the difference for your situation when we visit.

Can you protect a barn, shop, or outbuilding?

Yes. Outbuildings are a common request, particularly where equipment is stored.

Will it affect my insurance?

That is a question for your insurer, not for us. Some ask about it, and if yours has requested something specific, tell us and we will work to it.
